Title and Register a Vehicle Purchased from a Dealer

To apply for a registration and title for a vehicle purchased from a dealer, you will need the following:

  • A completed Registration and Title Application
  • Proof of insurance
  • Proof of ownership
  • Proof of Identity (all purchaser’s & co-purchaser’s)
  • A power of attorney is required from the leasing company if the customer/lessee is signing documents on behalf of the leasing company

Registration and Title for a Vehicle Purchased from an Individual

To register and title a vehicle purchased from an individual (non-dealer), you will need the following:

  • A completed Registration and Title Application
  • The previous owner’s certificate of title or the previous owner’s registration
  • Bill of sale
  • Proof of Insurance
  • Proof of Identity
  • South Jersey Auto Tags Power of Attorney

Transfer Your Registration and Title from Out of State

To transfer a registration and title from out of state, you will need the following:

  • Proof of Massachusetts insurance through the Registration and Title Application with insurance stamp and signature
  • Proof of ownership through certificate of title or if a lien exists on the vehicle, your registration from previous state

Leased vehicles and lessees – additional considerations The leasing company must be registered with the Massachusetts Department of Revenue. If the leasing company is not registered with the Department of Revenue, the application will be rejected until the leasing company registers

A power of attorney is required from the leasing company if the customer/lessee is signing documents on behalf of the leasing company.

Any erasures, white-outs, or alterations on the proof of ownership or application will not be accepted. 

All vehicles registered in Massachusetts must pass a yearly vehicle inspection.

Newly purchased vehicles must be inspected within 7 days of registration

Driving any motor vehicle without a valid inspection sticker is a traffic violation. It may result in a fine and affect your insurance rate.
